LIFE & Death

Motion Graphics, Brand Identity

In 1945, millions of Americans thought the Holocaust was exaggerated or simply untrue.
The day before Germany surrendered, LIFE Magazine published the largest and clearest photos of the atrocity to date, but left out a key part of the story: that most of the victims in these photos were Jews.

To celebrate the opening of a new terminal, Newark Airport teamed up with the Public Art Fund and the Port Authority on one of the largest public arts projects since the days of Roosevelt. Among the new works is a colossal mural from Newark-based Indigenous Ecuadorian artist Layqa Nuna Yawar.

Layqa is the winner of the Best Picture Award and a finalist for the Best Cinematography Award at the Summer 2023 Oregon Documentary Festival.

In the studio of Philadelphia-based artists Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib, the Pine Barrens forest has been condensed and transplanted to a terrarium no larger than 12 cubic feet. A Tim Burton-esque landscape is reflected infinitely in the terrarium's mirrored walls and captured with a motion-controlled camera and specialized macro lens that dramatically shift the scale and perspective of this miniature landscape. Hironaka & Suib transform this microcosmic film set into the home of chimeric forest dwellers who consider themes of precarity, mutualism and collaborative survival.
